Commission receives certification

September 13, 2013 - The Parkersburg News and Sentinel

Wood County commissioners received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design     plaque and certification for the Wood County Justice Center on Monday.

Jill Watkins, sustainability coordinator for ZMM Architects and Engineers, said the justice center becomes the third building in Parkersburg with the designation. Others include the Bureau of the Public Debt and Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

The Green Building system was developed more than 10 years ago.

The center houses magistrate court, law enforcement and the holding center. Watkins said improved air quality, reflective roof and high efficiency HVAC are features of the "green" building.

Eighty-five percent of demo and construction waste generated during the renovation

for the facility was either salvaged or recycled, translating to

about 487 tons of waste that did not go into the landfill, Watkins said

.

Breisch & Crowley of St. Clairsville, Ohio, aided the county in compliance

with the green building standards to qualify for the LEED certification.

The Wood County Justice Center - Joseph P. Albright Sr. Building was dedicated in

December 2011 and offices were moved in the first part of January.

Construction cost, including final change orders for the facility was $5.1 million.

The former magistrate court building was razed for a parking lot.

The former holding center and law enforcement building remain.

ZMM architect/engineer Adam Krason was the project designer

and Jarvis, Downing and Emch Construction was the main contractor on the project.
